How to Reset the Water Filter Status Light

Resetting the Water Filter Status Light for Maytag Refrigerators

How to reset the water filter status light?

The water filter status needs to be reset every time the water filter is replaced, it does not automatically reset (on most models). Resetting the water filter status light is going to vary by model and refrigerator type and it is recommended that you consult your Owner's Manual for the specific instructions for your model.   Below are a couple of examples of how to reset the water filter light/status.  Some models will automatically reset after the new filter has been installed.

Type 1

  • After changing the filter, touch MAX COOL and MAX ICE together for 3 seconds to reset the water filter.
  • The display will do a 3-second countdown, then flash the icon and play a tone.

Type 2

  • After changing the filter, reset the filter status light by pressing and holding the "FILTER RESET" button.
  • The status light will turn off when the system is reset.

Type 3

  • After changing the water filter, reset the status. Press and hold the "WATER FILTER" button for 3 seconds.
  • When the system is reset, the water filter icon will return to its BLUE color and the words “Replace Filter” will disappear from the display.

Type 4

  • After changing the water filter, reset the status. Press the "OPTIONS" button,  followed by "FILTER RESET", then "MEASURED FILL" to confirm.
  • The status light will turn off when the system is reset.

Type 5

  • After changing the filter, reset the filter status light by pressing and hold the LIGHT and ICE TYPE buttons for 3 seconds. The status light will turn off when the system is reset.

When should you replace your water filter?

It is recommended that the water filter be replaced every 6 months, when the indicator light comes on,  or as needed.  A clogged or incorrectly installed water filter will reduce the water flow to the ice maker and dispenser, which could result in small ice cubes, low ice production and/or longer dispensing times.  If the filter is clogged and you are not able to immediately replace it, leave the filter out so the water system is in bypass mode. With the filter removed, the water system will continue to operate, bypassing the filter, and the clogged filter will not cause slow water dispensing or low ice production. However, in order to have filtered water, you will need to install a new filter.

NOTE:  One or two drops of water immediately after dispensing is normal.  It may be necessary to hold the container under the dispenser for 2 to 3 seconds after releasing the dispenser button.

Refrigerator with an Indicator Light

The water filter should be changed when the filter status light/indicator (located on the temperature control panel) alerts that a filter change is needed. Consult your Owner's Manual for additional instructions and location of your particular filter status light/indicator.

Refrigerator without an Indicator Light

If a filter status light/indicator is not present, the filter should be changed at least once every 6 to 9 months.  If the water flow to the water dispenser or ice maker noticeably decreases before 6 months have passed, you may need to replace the water filter cartridge more often. Decreased water flow is a sign that the filter is clogged and needs to be replaced.
