Electrical Supply Needed for a Washer
Electrical Supply Requirements for your Maytag Washer
When setting up your washing machine, understanding its electrical supply requirements is crucial for optimal performance and safety. In the United States, most washing machines operate on a standard voltage of 120 volts. Supplying the correct voltage ensures that the appliance functions efficiently without risking damage to its internal components.
Wiring and Outlet Specifications
To ensure your washer operates safely and efficiently, it’s important to adhere to the following wiring and outlet specifications:
- Types of Electrical Outlets: Use a grounded,120 V, 60 Hz AC only, three-prong electrical outlet compatible with your washer. This type of outlet provides a safe path for electricity and reduces the risk of electrical shock. This washer is equipped with a power supply cord with a 3-prong grounding plug. Do not use an extension cord.
- Circuit Breaker Needs: A time-delay fuse or circuit breaker is recommended. It is recommended that a separate circuit breaker serving only this appliance be provided.
- Grounding Requirements: Ensure that your washer is properly grounded. Grounding protects against electrical shocks and enhances the safety of your appliance. Follow local electrical codes and Maytag installation instructions for proper grounding.
Check with a qualified electrician if you are unsure that the washer is properly grounded or properly installed.
Location Requirements
Here are some additional requirements and tips for your washing machine:
- Do not install, store, or operate a washer where it will be exposed to weather or in temperatures below 32°F (0°C). Water remaining in the washer after use may cause damage in low temperatures. Winterize the washer before storing it and exposing it to cold temperatures.
- Select the proper location for your washer to improve performance, minimize noise, and possible “washer walk.” Install your washer in a basement, laundry room, closet, or recessed area. Proper installation is your responsibility.
- You will need A water heater set to 120°F (49°C).
- A grounded electrical outlet is located within 6 feet (1.8 m) of the power cord on the back of the washer.
- Hot and cold water faucets located within 4 feet (1.2 m) of hot and cold water fill valves on the washer, and water pressure of 20 psi-100 psi (137.9 kPa-689.6 kPa).
- A level floor with a maximum slope of 1" (25 mm) under the entire washer. Installing on carpet or surfaces with foam backing is not recommended.
- The floor must support the washer’s total weight (with water and load) of 315 pounds (143 kg).
