Detergent Caked in the Dispenser

Why is Detergent Remaining in the Maytag Dishwasher Dispenser

Finding detergent caked in the dishwasher dispenser can be a frustrating experience, but understanding the causes is the first step toward resolving it. This concern can lead to dishwasher soap not dissolving, impacting your dishwasher's performance and the cleanliness of your dishes. In this guide, we'll explore the causes of detergent residue, offer prevention tips, and provide troubleshooting steps to help restore your dishwasher's efficiency. By addressing this issue, you can ensure that your Maytag dishwasher consistently delivers optimal results, leaving your dishes spotless and your kitchen running smoothly.

Understanding Detergent Residue Causes

Detergent residue in the dishwasher dispenser is a common problem that can arise for several reasons. One major factor is the improper use of old detergent. Older detergents, when exposed to air, tend to clump and dissolve poorly, causing the dispenser door to stick to the detergent. Replace the detergent if necessary and store it in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry place. Other potential causes for detergent clumping in the dispenser:

  • Cycle Interruption: Did the dishwasher finish its cycle?  If the cycle was interrupted or didn't finish, the detergent may not have time to dissolve.
  • Dispenser Blocked: Proper loading is essential for cleaning dishes, but improper loading can block the dispenser compartment, preventing the door from opening. Try to avoid placing large items in front of the dishwasher. Also, check to ensure the spray arms can spin freely; this will make sure water is sprayed correctly.
  • Water Temperature: Detergent packets usually dissolve more easily, and should be placed in the dispenser the same as powdered or gel. If they are not dissolving, verify the water temperature and run the hot water in the sink closest to the dishwasher.
  • Dirty Dispenser: Clean the dispenser when caked detergent is present, and incorporate cleaning the dispenser as part of your monthly maintenance routine.

Preventing Detergent Caking

To ensure your dishwasher operates efficiently and prevent detergent caking, it's vital to adhere to proper dosage and type guidelines. Always measure detergent according to the manufacturer’s recommendations; using too much can lead to residue buildup and issues with dishwasher soap not dissolving. Choosing a high-quality detergent that dissolves easily and is specifically formulated for dishwashers is also important.

Dishwashers should be cleaned approximately every 30 days for optimal performance. Using affresh®  Dishwasher Cleaner every month will help keep your dishwasher from filming and spotting, and keep the interior clean and free of odors. Clean the filter regularly and run a cleaning cycle with dishwasher cleaner to remove any accumulated grime or residue, thereby reducing the likelihood of the detergent door not opening properly.

Cleans even where you can't see

What type of detergent should I use?

High-quality pre-measured tablets and packs are recommended for improved performance.

Quality tablets and packs have been proven better than powder, liquid, or gel detergents at reducing filming on dishes. Using tablets and packs over time will start to reduce or eliminate white film. They are suitable for all water hardness and soil levels. Also, by using rinse aid, you can minimize the repeat buildup of the white film (not all packs and tablets contain rinse aid). Always place pre-measured detergents in the main compartment and close the lid.

The Pre-Wash indicator on the dispenser lid is for customers who use powder or gel detergent and wish to add an amount of detergent to the Pre-Wash cycle. The volume of detergent added here is approximately eight cubic centimeters if filled full and level. Any detergent added here would be immediately added to the wash when the cycle starts, versus detergent inside the dispenser, which is added during the main wash cycle.

NOTE: Follow the instructions on the package when using other dishwasher detergent types.

  • Use automatic dishwasher detergent only. Add detergent just before starting a cycle.
  • Fresh automatic dishwasher detergent results in better cleaning.
  • Store the detergent in a tightly closed container and place it in a cool, dry place.
  • Extremely hard water mineral deposits (15 grains per U.S. gallon or more) can damage your dishwasher and make good results difficult to achieve. A water softener is recommended to avoid damage and achieve good results.
