Ensuring correct water pressure for your refrigerator is crucial for your Maytag appliance to function efficiently. Optimal water pressure ensures consistent ice production and smooth water dispensing, while inadequate pressure can lead to performance issues. Low Water Pressure Indicators

Water pressure that is outside of the recommended range could cause one or more of the following:

  • Decreased water flow rate from the dispenser. Slow fill times. 
  • Hollow, small, or irregular-sized ice cubes. 
  • Slow or no ice production. 

Water Pressure Recommendations

Improving water pressure is essential for refrigerators with ice makers or water dispensers. Consider these practical tips:

  • Water pressure should be between 30 and 120 psi (pounds per square inch) or 207 - 827 kPa (kilopascal). A licensed, qualified plumber can test the water pressure in your home.
  • Ensure that the water shutoff valve is fully open.
  • Check for kinks in the water supply line, especially if the refrigerator was moved recently. 
  • Replace the water filter; a clogged filter can decrease water flow. 
  • If using a reverse osmosis system, perform regular inspection of the filters.

Using a Reverse Osmosis System

Connecting a reverse osmosis (RO) system directly to a refrigerator can work, but it's crucial to ensure proper water pressure and avoid potential issues. RO systems can reduce water pressure, which may affect the refrigerator's water dispenser and ice maker. The water pressure to the refrigerator's water inlet valve needs to be between 40 and 60 psi (pounds per square inch) or 275-414 kPa (kilopascal). If connected to a reverse-osmosis system, the following may help improve the water pressure:

  • Allow the storage tank for the reverse osmosis system to refill after heavy use.
  • Ensure the sediment filter in the RO system is not blocked and replace it if needed.
  • If your refrigerator has a water filter, it's recommended to remove or bypass it.
