Refrigerator Noise - Buzzing

Buzzing Noises Coming from Your Maytag Refrigerator

The compressor and ice maker are common sources. You may hear a brief buzz as the compressor starts or while it runs to maintain temperature. The condenser fan (behind or underneath the unit) and the evaporator fan (inside the freezer) can also hum or buzz as they move air.

Temperature settings influence how often these parts run. After large grocery loads or frequent door openings, the refrigerator works harder, and you may hear more frequent sounds until temperatures stabilize. If the refrigerator's buzzing noise appears mainly after loading food, it may resolve once the cooling demand drops.

External factors matter as well. If the refrigerator is not level, vibrations can transfer to surrounding cabinets or the floor and sound like buzzing.

If the refrigerator has an ice maker but is not connected to a water supply, the water valve will make a buzzing or clicking sound as it tries to fill the ice maker. Check that the ice maker is turned off if the refrigerator is not connected to a water supply.  Check your Owner's Manual for instructions on turning the ice maker on and off.

Steps to Troubleshoot and Fix Buzzing Noises

  • Level and clearances: Verify the refrigerator is level front to back and side to side. Adjust leveling legs until stable, and ensure front rollers are off the floor if applicable. Provide the recommended clearances around the sides, top, and back for proper airflow.
  • Clean the condenser area: If your model allows user cleaning, unplug the refrigerator, remove the rear access panel if present, and gently vacuum dust from the condenser coils and condenser fan shroud. Reinstall the panel before restoring power to help quiet a refrigerator noise - buzzing noise caused by restricted airflow.
  • Adjust temperature settings: Use recommended factory settings (about 37°F for the refrigerator and 0°F for the freezer).  After adding warm groceries, allow up to 24 hours for temperatures to stabilize before evaluating noise. Limit frequent door openings and keep air vents inside the compartments clear to reduce a buzzing refrigerator during high cooling demand.
  • Address water and ice maker sources: If buzzing occurs during ice maker fill, confirm the water supply is on, the line is not kinked, and the water filter is correctly installed and not overdue for replacement. A restricted filter or line can cause the inlet valve to buzz louder than normal during fill cycles, leading to loud refrigerator buzzing.
