How to Use the Humidity Control or Energy Saver Feature

Maytag Refrigerator Humidity or Moisture Control Feature

Understanding your refrigerator’s humidity control and energy saver features helps keep food fresher while reducing energy use. These settings manage moisture, minimize condensation, and support efficient cooling. Use the guidance below to set each feature correctly and know when to adjust it. If you are searching for how to use the humidity control or energy saver feature in refrigerator models, the steps below apply to most Maytag configurations.

Understanding the Energy Saver Feature

The energy saver feature lowers power use by reducing operation of components that manage exterior moisture, such as mullion or anti-sweat heaters. In normal conditions, this helps cut energy consumption while maintaining cooling performance. On many Maytag models, the refrigerator moisture control button may control these anti-sweat heaters or appear as an Energy Saver option.

When to use it:

  • Turn Energy Saver on in cool, dry environments where exterior condensation is unlikely.
  • Turn it off if you notice moisture on door gaskets, the center mullion, or cabinet seams—especially in warm, humid weather or in kitchens without air conditioning. Allow several hours for moisture to clear before re-enabling.

Best practices:

  • Limit door openings to help maintain stable temperatures and reduce moisture swings.
  • Keep door seals clean and ensure they fully contact the cabinet.
  • In consistently humid homes or with frequent door use, leaving Energy Saver off may help prevent condensation.

Certain refrigerators are equipped with a separate control to prevent exterior moisture from forming on the vertical hinged seal.     Within the seal is a heater that warms the surface to prevent exterior moisture.

Energy Saver (Some Models):

The Energy Saver Feature controls a heater that helps to reduce moisture on the vertical hinged seal. To turn the heater on, turn the Energy Saver switch to the "off" position. NOTE: Controls will vary depending on the type of refrigeration that you have. For more specific instructions for your model, please see the Owner's Manual.

Humidity Control or Moisture Control (Some Models):

The Humidity Control or Moisture Control Feature turns on the heater to help reduce moisture on the vertical hinged seal. On some models, press the Humidity Control pad once. The Humidity Control indicator light will illuminate and the heater will be turned on.

Other models will use a touchpad interface to activate the Humidity Control. See your Owner's Manual for more instructions on how to turn the Humidity Control off and on. If you would like to download or view product literature for your appliance, please visit our Manuals and Literature page.

Automatic Heater (Some Models)

Models that do not have an Energy Saver or Humidity Control feature may have an automatic heater. This means there is no option to turn on the heater; the control will automatically turn the vertical hinged seal heater on as needed. See your Owner's Manual for specific information on your Refrigerator.
