How Garage-Ready Refrigerators Work

Understanding and Using a Maytag Garage-Ready Refrigerator

Garage-ready refrigerators are designed to deliver consistent cooling performance in locations where ambient temperatures can fluctuate widely—such as garages, basements, utility rooms, and workshops. This guide explains how garage-ready refrigerators work, how these appliances manage temperature, and why their specialized construction is important for food safety and reliability. If you plan to place a refrigerator outside a climate-controlled kitchen, understanding how garage-ready refrigerators work and how a garage-ready refrigerator differs from standard units will help you select the right Maytag solution for your home.

What Does “Garage-Ready” Mean?

“Garage-ready” indicates a refrigerator designed and tested to operate properly in non-climate-controlled environments where temperatures can swing from near-freezing winter lows to warm summer highs. These models are built to maintain safe internal temperatures despite ambient fluctuations, protecting both fresh food and frozen items. Core attributes of garage-ready design include:

  • Controls calibrated for a wider ambient temperature range than typical indoor appliances.
  • In certain models, separate temperature management for the freezer compartments to protect both zones across varied ambient conditions.

By contrast, placing a non-garage-ready refrigerator in a garage can lead to performance challenges. In cold weather, a traditional unit may cycle less or not at all because the ambient air masks the need for cooling, causing the freezer to warm and potentially thaw. In hot weather, the unit may run excessively, increasing energy consumption, stressing components, or failing to maintain safe food temperatures.

When to Change to “Garage Mode”?

Some models have a dedicated “Garage Mode” located on the temperature control.  The "Garage Mode" only needs to be activated during certain temperature ranges. Refer to the chart below for descriptions of each setting and when to activate it.

Air Flow Control: Increase the cold airflow to a specific compartment: Freezer Setting  Setting Description
Garage Mode Knob.png Recommended
  • Factory Preset
  • Ambient temperature is between  55° - 110°degrees F

Garage Mode
  • Ambient temperature is consistently between 38º - 55° degrees F
Max

Increase airflow to the freezer

  • Room temperature is high
  • Large amount of items were added to the freezer section
Min

Increase airflow to the refrigerator

  • Large amount of groceries was loaded in the refrigerator section

IMPORTANT: Once the performance is achieved, return the Airflow control to the recommended setting to keep the refrigerator operating at optimum efficiency.

Maintenance Tips for Garage-Ready Refrigerators

Routine care helps steady performance in challenging environments. Keep the area around the refrigerator clean and unobstructed. Refer to the location and clearance specifics provided in the Maytag Owner’s Manual for further guidance.

Regular cleaning and upkeep practices:

  • Clean door gaskets and cabinet surfaces to maintain a tight seal.
  • Interior cleaning of the shelves and bins will help with odor transfer.
  • Vacuum or brush condenser coils as directed in the owner’s manual to support efficient heat exchange.

Monitoring temperature settings:

  • Use recommended temperature setpoints —commonly around 37°F for fresh food and 0°F for the freezer.
  • Avoid overpacking; maintain airflow around shelves, vents, and sensors to support balanced cooling.

Managing humidity and condensation:

  • In humid climates, minimize prolonged door openings to reduce moisture entering the cabinet.
  • Inspect door gaskets for wear and replace them if damaged to improve sealing.
  • Verify the refrigerator is level to promote proper door closure and drainage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use any refrigerator in the garage?

Standard refrigerators are intended for indoor, climate-controlled environments. Using a non-garage-ready unit in a garage can lead to temperature instability. For optimal results, select a garage-ready refrigerator that is specifically designed for this environment. If you want a good refrigerator for garage applications, select a model for variable ambient temperatures. Reference your Owner's Manual to verify the recommended temperature range for your refrigerator.

What ambient temperature ranges do garage-ready models support?

Ranges vary by product. Refer to your Maytag product documentation for detailed ambient operating limits and installation guidelines. If your space regularly falls outside the listed range, consider improving the environment or selecting a model rated for those conditions.
