Setting the Controls for a Freezer

How to Properly Set the Controls in Your Maytag Chest Freezer

If the Freezer is not freezing properly, check to make sure the Freezer is turned on. Some Freezers need to be manually turned back on after a power outage or surge. The Freezer could also accidentally be turned off during routine cleaning.

For more information on how to turn the Freezer Off and On, please see your Owner's Manual for specific information on your model. In some models the Power/On button needs to be held for, at least, 3 seconds to turn the Freezer on and off.

If you would like to download or view product literature for your appliance, please visit our Manuals and Literature page.

Are the controls set correctly for the surrounding conditions?

The mid-setting should be correct for normal usage and is designed to maintain the temperature at or near 0°F (-17.8°C) under normal operating conditions.

  • If you need to adjust the temperature, wait at least 24 hours between adjustments and then recheck the temperature.
  • To make the Freezer colder, adjust the control to the next higher setting. To make the Freezer less cold, adjust the control to the next lower setting.
  • Allow the Freezer to cool for six to eight hours before filling with frozen food. Let the freezer cool overnight before adding large amounts of unfrozen food.
  • Never add more than two to three pounds (907 to 1,350 g) of unfrozen food per cubic foot (28.32 L) of freezer space.
