How to Address Out of Balanced Loads in Your Maytag Washer
Encountering out-of-balance loads in your washer can be quite frustrating; understanding how to tackle this common issue is vital for maintaining optimal washer performance. This guide will delve into the causes of unbalanced loads in washing machines and provide practical solutions to resolve them. Additionally, you'll learn preventive measures to keep your Maytag washer functioning smoothly and efficiently. Let's explore how to keep your laundry routine hassle-free.
Understanding Unbalanced Loads
Suppose the load is not evenly distributed in the basket when spinning begins. In that case, an “off-balance” load can create movement in the basket, resulting in noise, vibration, reduced spin speed, longer cycle times, and decreased washer performance. The error typically occurs during the spin part of the cycle, after the wash portion has completed.
Signs of an unbalanced load washer include loud noises during the spin cycle, excessive shaking, and clothes remaining wet after the cycle is complete. These indicators suggest that your laundry is not evenly distributed. In some instances, your washer may stop spinning if a significant imbalance is detected, requiring you to redistribute the load manually.
If the washer detects an “out-of-balance” load, it will try to self-correct by refilling the washer and gently rotating back and forth. During this self-correction cycle, the wash is attempting to redistribute the clothing inside the washer basket evenly. If the washer fails to level or even out the load during the self-correction cycle, it will display an error message.
How to Correct an Out-of-Balance Load
Restoring balance in your washer is straightforward with these steps.
If the error is present:
Cancel the cycle by pressing the Start button or disconnecting the power cord.
Run a drain-only cycle (if water is present).
Before starting a new cycle, rearrange clothing and/or remove some items to ensure the load is level and not overloaded. Suggestion: Try using the Bulky or Heavy Duty cycle.
[Optional]—If the wash has been completed and you just need to extract water from your garments, you may run a Drain & Spin cycle after rearranging the load.
If the cycle can be paused:
Press the Start button to pause the cycle.
Open the lid and rearrange the clothing or reduce the load size.
Restart the cycle by pressing the Start button.
How to Help Prevent Unbalanced Loads
Unbalanced loads can be prevented by following a couple of key steps.
Proper Loading
Load clothing in loose heaps evenly around the basket. Don’t overload the basket. Clothes should be loosely added and only as high as the top row of holes in the wash basket. Balance heavy items with lighter ones to maintain equal distribution during the spin cycle and avoid an unbalanced load washer.
Pick the Right Cycle
Select the appropriate wash cycle and settings for your type of wash load. For large loads or oversized items, pick the “Bulky” cycle. It is not recommended to wash a single absorbent article. For example, do not wash one rug. Wash two or three garments to balance the load for a good spin. Use delicate cycles for lighter fabrics and heavy-duty cycles for bulky items. Maytag washers offer specific settings for various loads, helping to balance loads in washing machines.
Level the Washer
Regular maintenance helps prevent future balance issues. Periodically check the washer to ensure all feet are firmly on the ground and the washer is level. The washer needs to be level from side to side and front to back. Try to rock the washer diagonally, from corner to corner, with your hands. If the washer rocks, it needs to be leveled.
