Humming or Whirling Noise - Top Load Washer

Possible Solutions

Humming or Whirling Noises:

Noises that newer top load washers make can be completely different than older washers. The humming/whirring noise is prevalent and part of the regular operation:

The motor causes the Humming/Whirling sounds you would hear during the agitation/wash or spin portions of the cycle. You may listen to an intermittent humming/whirling noise during the agitation/wash portion of the cycle as the motor turns the washer basket clockwise and counterclockwise.

You may also hear a humming/whirling noise during the spin portion of the cycle as the motor winds up to turn the washer basket at a higher speed.

The pump will run continuously throughout the drain cycle. You may hear a humming sound from the pump; this may be more noticeable once the majority of the water has been drained. These sounds are part of the normal washer operation.

Which cycle is the humming or whirling noise occurring?

Start of Cycle:

At the beginning of the cycle, the washer will go through multiple spins of the dry load to sense the load size. This may cause a humming/whirling motor sound. This sound is part of the regular washer operation.

Agitation, Wash or Spinning:

You may listen to an intermittent humming/whirling noise during the wash cycle as the motor turns the washer basket clockwise and counterclockwise. This is normal.

Draining:

The pump will run continuously throughout the drain cycle. This produces a humming type noise, which is normal operation.

None of the above or unsure of which cycle:

If you are unsure what cycle the washer is in while making the noise, let the machine continue to see if the sound continues. If it does, and you feel that it is not operating schedule service correctly.
