Dull Surfaces on Dishes

Possible Solution

Is the water turned on?

The water supply value must be completely open to wash and rinse the dishes properly.

Can the dullness be removed?

Try the following methods to see if the dullness can be removed, then follow the below troubleshooting based on your findings.

  1. Wash the item in a solution of warm, soapy water.  Rinse with clean water.
  2. Clean the item with vinegar. Rinse with clean water.
  3. Neither method removed the dullness.

Warm, Soapy Water Removed Dullness

Was the correct amount of detergent used?

  • Do not use hand soap or laundry detergents. Use automatic dishwasher detergents only.
  • High-quality pre-measured tablets and packs are recommended for improved performance.
  • Quality tablets and packs have been proven better than powder, liquid, or gel detergents at reducing filming on dishes. Using tablets and packs over time will reduce or eliminate white film. They are suitable for all water hardness and soil levels. Also, by using rinse aid, you can minimize the repeat buildup of the white film (not all packs and tablets contain rinse aid). Always place pre-measured detergents in the main compartment and close the lid.

If using a liquid or powder detergent, try filling the dispenser half full and/or reducing the amount of detergent used.

Is the spray arm blocked?

A blocked spray arm can delay detergent release and soil removal. If the delay is too long, excessive residue may remain during the wash cycle, preventing the final rinse from providing optimal performance.

How to check: Before starting a cycle, spin the middle spray arm by hand to ensure no items are preventing it from spinning freely. If you feel any resistance, rearrange the dishes.

Was the correct cycle selected?

Some soil levels and water conditions require a stronger, heavier cycle. While the dishwasher's soil sensor normally adjusts for these factors, certain extreme situations can arise that it cannot fully compensate for. If the problem persists, try using a stronger or heavier cycle.

Is the detergent door blocked or does it remain closed?

If water cannot reach the dispenser, the detergent may release too late in the cycle. This prevents it from dissolving properly and delays soil removal, leading to poor cleaning results.

Before closing the dishwasher door and starting a cycle, confirm that no items are blocking or touching the dispenser. Also, avoid overfilling the dispenser, as this can cause the latch to bind and prevent the door from opening. Always follow your Owner's Manual for specific instructions on loading the dispenser.

Are the dishes correctly loaded?

Properly loading the dishes is essential for optimal cleaning performance and drying.  Here are some tips for proper loading:

  • Avoid overloading: While it may be tempting to cram in as many dishes as possible, overloading restricts water circulation and leaves dishes dirty. Ensure there is enough space between items for water and detergent to reach every surface.

  • Load items at an angle: Face the soiled surfaces downward and inward toward the spray arms. Angling your dishes not only ensures better cleaning but also promotes water runoff for superior drying performance.

  • Place plastics correctly: Plastic items are uniquely challenging to wash and dry because they don't retain heat like glass or ceramics, and they often have complex shapes that trap water. For the best drying results, place plastic cups, bowls, and mugs in the third-level rack if available. Never place plastic items on the lower rack, as the upper racks protect them from high heat and prevent warping.

Vinegar Removed Dullness

Do you have hard water?

Hard water buildup is fairly common, especially in households using private wells without a whole-house water softener, or where the softener is malfunctioning. This buildup not only leaves unsightly spots and film on your dishes, but excessive deposits can also damage the dishwasher by restricting water flow and reducing heating efficiency.

The optimal operating range for this dishwasher is water hardness fewer than 15 grains per gallon (gpg). Please have your water supply tested and, if necessary, install or adjust a water softener to bring it within this proper range.

Was the correct amount of detergent used?

Even if the water hardness is within the recommended range, the quality and quantity of detergent used can play a large role in the overall performance.
If problems persist even with water hardness that is within the recommended parameters, try using a premium packet detergent to correct the problem. These higher-end packs generally have better water-softening capability than lower-end varieties.

Do not use hand soap or laundry detergents. Use automatic dishwasher detergents only.

Using pre-measured dishwasher detergent tablets and pods has been proven better than powder, liquid, or gel detergents to reduce filming on your dishes. Using these tablets and pods will reduce or eliminate white film over time. Also, by using a rinse aid, you can minimize repeat build-up of white film.

If using a liquid or powder detergent, try filling the dispenser half full and/or reducing the amount of detergent being used.

Does the dishwasher need to be cleaned?

Don’t just wash the dishes—take the time to ensure the dishwasher itself is clean, too. For optimal performance, the appliance interior should be cleaned approximately every 30 days.

Using affresh® Dishwasher Cleaner once a month helps prevent film and spots on your dishes while keeping the dishwasher interior sparkling and free of odors.

Neither Method Worked

Most materials have a lifespan. Eventually, the strong chemical and thermal conditions of the dishwasher can wear off the smooth, shiny surface and leave behind an eroded or pitted one that will not reflect light like when it was new.

Some conditions can accelerate the wear and are as follows:

  • Excessively soft water. Detergents are designed to expect some water hardness to be present. If water is exceptionally soft and/or high amounts of strong detergents are used, the chemistry provided to address and impact the water hardness can instead impact and cause damage to the dish load or dishwasher itself. Test water hardness and ensure it is within the proper range.
  • Using too much detergent. If using powder or liquid detergents, don't overdose. Consider using premium detergent packets that typically have specific chemistry designed to minimize damage.
  • Poor quality glazing. Higher quality china will typically have better and longer-lasting glazing. Also, ensure that any china washed in the dishwasher is marked as dishwasher safe.
  • Long/hot cycles. If uncertain about the quality of items, try using quick, low-temperature cycles to minimize damage. It may be necessary to evaluate the trade-off between performance and damage if items are of very poor quality. Consider the use of premium detergent packets, which usually have a chemistry that is designed to minimize damage to the items washed in the dishwasher.
