Is the water turned on? 

The water supply must be completely open to wash and rinse the dishes properly.

Why is there damage to my metallic dishes?

Dishwasher chemistry and temperature generally do not impact metallic decorations like gold/silver rims. Most often the problem is associated with mechanical wear and tear from contact from handling.

Try to prevent any metallic surfaces from touching during loading/unloading or while in the racks. Consider placing cups on top of the rack tines to avoid rims from rubbing against the rack. Take care not to slide cups on cupboard or drawer bottoms when storing because once the metallic decoration has been damaged or removed it cannot be replaced.
