Possible Solutions
Is the garbage disposer knockout plug removed?
If the dishwasher is connected to a garbage disposer, be sure the knockout plug has been removed from the disposer inlet.
- Disconnect power to the dishwasher
- Disconnect the dishwasher drain hose from the garbage disposal.
- Use a bucket or large bowl to capture any water that may be in the drain hose when disconnecting the hose from the inlet.
- Inspect the connection point at the disposal to ensure the knockout plug has been removed.
- The knockout plug is recessed into the inlet and is not visible when looking at if from the side. Insert a pencil into the inlet and feel for the knockout plug. If the pencil is able to go into the disposer inlet about 3 inches the knockout plug has been removed.
Check out Connecting Dishwasher Drain to Garbage Disposal for more information on removing the garbage disposer knockout plug.
Was the drain installed correctly?
Depending on the model, a "high loop" is needed for proper drainage. A "high loop" is a plumbing setup where the dishwasher drain hose is routed above the level of the sink's drain water. To check this, look under your sink to see if the hose arches up and is secured near the top of the cabinet wall or underside of the countertop before it connects to the disposer or drain pipe. If the hose runs flat or slants downward, you can correct it by pulling the excess hose upward and securing it with a bracket or zip tie. This loop prevents dirty sink water from siphoning back into your dishwasher. Refer to the Installation Instruction provided with your dishwasher for specific information.
Check the drain line for kinks
If the dishwasher is not draining, check the following before resuming the cycle.
- Filter: Remove the filter and clean it thoroughly under running water.
- Drain Hose: Check for a kinked, pinched, or clogged hose from the back of the dishwasher to the sink.
- Sink Disposer: If connected, ensure the disposer is clear and that the knockout plug was removed (for new installations).
- Air Gap: If used, refer to the manufacturer for instructions on removing the cap and clearing blockages.
