Vent Not Removing Odor or Vapor - Over-the-Range Microwave
Possible Solutions
Do the filter(s) need to be changed or cleaned?
IMPORTANT: Before cleaning or replacing components, make sure all controls are off, and the microwave oven is cool. Always follow label instructions on cleaning products.
- Grease filters are on the underside of the microwave oven. Clean monthly or as prompted by the filter status indicator (some models).
- The charcoal filter is only used when microwave is NOT vented externally. The charcoal filter cannot be cleaned and should be replaced about every 6 months, or as prompted by filter status indicator (some models).
Test the Filter Performance
Remove filter(s) and test for improved performance.
If performance is NOT improved with filter(s) removed and the unit is vented externally with the wall damper opening correctly or insect screen clean: You may need to have your vent cleaned by the installer or handyman.
If performance is improved, obtain replacement filter(s). Do not continue to operate the microwave with the filter(s) removed.
Is the unit vented externally or internally?
Determine if the microwave is vented externally or internally:
- Turn on the vent fan
- If the airflow is not felt at the top front of the microwave the unit is vented externally.
- If the microwave is vented externally, check the exterior wall cap damper for proper operation (damper flap open when the vent fan is on or insect screen not obstructed).
Refer to the Installation Instructions for more information on vent configuration.
