Checking the Main Gas Valve

How to Check the Main Gas Valve for Maytag Cooking Appliances

If your cooktop is not working properly, ensure the main gas shut-off valve is in the "ON" position. The shut-off will typically be on the gas branch piping immediately after the piping comes through the wall or floor.

How to Check

You can check the shut-off valve, which is typically located in the cabinet below or adjacent to the cooktop. We recommend consulting with a local certified technician if you cannot locate the valve.

  1. Locate the main gas shut-off valve.
  2. Verify the main gas shut-off valve is in the open position. Most service valves are single-lever ball valves; the handle parallel to the line means gas flows, and perpendicular means it's cut off.
  3. Turn on the oven and test that the unit is properly heating.

NOTE: The cooktop may be connected to a flexible supply line. Take care not to overextend the supply line. The main gas valve will usually be at the end of a fixed pipe and connected to the pressure regulator with a flexible supply line. Take care not to kink or pinch this flexible pipe.
